As October approaches, early Autumn is here and now is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the darker months - before the Pumpkins arrive!
While we are still blessed with some sunny weekends and light evenings, these quick and easy jobs will keep your garden tidy, safe and looking it's best into Autumn.
You can do a lot to help your lawn before the winter months arrive. October is your last chance to sow new grass from seed and can be ideal with early autumn sun and more regular rainfall. Choose a seed that suits all seasons and cover those bare patches and rough areas.
Easily renovate your lawn. Grass cuttings, moss and debris build up in your lawn over the spring and summer months. October is a great time to remove these using a wire rake, at the same time adding a good quality compost to feed the lawn. This will leave the lawn looking a little messy but it will soon recover, strong and healthy.
To improve drainage use a fork to aerate the lawn. To further strengthen, apply an even top dressing of sand and good quality top soil.
Plant spring bulbs such at Crocus and Daffodils
Cut back perennials
Regularly clear leaves as they appear. Avoiding a mammoth back breaking job and damage to your lawn.
Give your beds and borders a final good weeding
Trim and tidy evergreen hedges and shrubs, something you can get in the habit of doing regularly all year round.
Clear gutters. With increased rainfall and debris that have built up over the summer it is essential gutters are clear and water can flow freely. Blocked gutters can cause water damage to your property and cost a lot of money to repair and replace. Prevention is the cure.
Pressure wash paths, patios and decks, removing built up grime and potential slip hazards.
